Matthew Johnson Jr.
Born: 23 August 1950
Died: 27 September 1966
Matthew Johnson Jr. was just 16 years old when he was shot in the back by 51-year-old patrolman Alvin Johnson in Hunters Point for fleeing a presumably stolen vehicle. This event is said to be the instigating case of police brutality that spurred the formation of the Black Panther Party and led to more than three days of civil disturbances in the San Francisco area. The killing was eventually ruled an "excusable homicide," and Officer Alvin Johnson was reinstated with full pay.
The FBI response indicated that no records were ever kept on Matthew Johnson.
